The Catch-Up Mixtape, Vol. 6

July 27, 2018 1 comment

As this is my final Catch-Up Mixtape release, I felt it warranted more than just a couple of lines and a download link at the bottom of the last post. So, I’m giving it a final hurrah because it truly is the last one. As I mentioned a few weeks back, the Catch-Up will be a thing of the past as the new version of this journey will not be as strict as the last. If there’s a new album by an artist I really want to hear, I’ll just listen to it when I get it. I’m going to put that to the test pretty soon as a lot of cool stuff is coming out in the next few months.

TTIHH Catch Up 6 CoverBut now we celebrate the release of ‘These Things I Have Heard Catch-Up, Vol. 6,’ available for download now in two zip files [Part 1 | Part 2] because free file hosting comes with limits. These 32 songs from nearly 40 albums symbolize the future of this project and how these mixes can become more than just a mere novelty to traipse through when bored; they are going to be a truly eclectic time capsule of music and when it entered my life. Should be fun.

Finally, as always, feel free to enjoy other mixtapes I have made for this blog …

dirtycomputerArtist: Janelle Monae
Album: ‘Dirty Computer
Year: 2018

Why does knowing about Janelle Monae still feel like my own little secret? I know she gets a good amount of press and she made a splash when she revealed the late-great Prince helped her write the beat for “Make Me Feel” but, other than that, this album didn’t get the praise it should have. She toes that line between being edgy and being cool. Her lyrics are (mostly) less flamethrower and more campfire. This album was exquisitely crafted with a lot of care showing her range and devotion to the loving art of creation.

Track of Distinction: The raw and unyielding “Django Jane” beats out “Screwed” just because of its raw power. I would feel bad for doing otherwise.

guardians_of_the_galaxy_vol_2_awesome_mix_vol_2Artist: Soundtrack
Album: ‘Guardians of the Galaxy, Awesome Mix, Vol. 2
Year: 2017

The thing I find most interesting about these soundtracks is, unlike most other ones, there’s very little subtext to be found here. You can gather most of the emotional plot points of the movie just by listening to this album and be mostly correct. Sure, you’re not going to get the main plot but you will get the feeling of familiarity when you listen to this like you’ve just watched the movie again. It’s pretty cool.

Track of Distinction: “Fox On The Run” by Sweet is pretty badass and definitely something that sets itself apart.

ye_album_coverArtist: Kanye West
Album: ‘Ye
Year: 2018

Ever had a long conversation with a drunk or high person? The kind where they start off telling you their theory of everything and it devolves into all of their conspiracy theories about how the world hates them. And not just a passive hate, but an active hate that keeps them from reaching their full potential? Then they start naming names of the people that wronged them? And then they start crying because they start thinking they did it all to themselves? And then, blurry-eyed and staggering, they try to stand only to fall, pass out, and shit themselves? That’s this album. I’m just glad it was shorter than most of those conversations I’ve had in my life.

Track of Distinction: “Yikes” just be cause I couldn’t think of anything else that was worth it.

highashopeArtist: Florence + The Machine
Album: ‘High As Hope
Year: 2018

I’m ending my catch-up with a late addition (which is good because I couldn’t find my copy of the new Mountain Goats album anywhere) and it’s an album that, for me, cements Florence Welch as one of the great voices in contemporary music today. This album shows a lot of pain as well as a lot of strengths. As most of their songs do, they elicit a sense of power that seems to come from the depths of our dark souls so it can be released to finally give us peace. Florence and her band of souls show us the way and, for that, we thank you.

Track of Distinction: “The End of Love” brought the house down on an album that had many contenders for the crown.

That’s it! Soon, there will be a Catch-Up Mixtape coming before I jump back into the alphabet! See you then!

st_vincent_-_masseductionArtist: St. Vincent
Album: ‘Masseduction
Year: 2017

More people need to feel empowered by their music and musicians challenging them with their work. It’s easy and lazy to do the heavy lifting for your audience and, having a shared experience can often be more intimate and lasting and just another pop single. St. Vincent isn’t here for your bullshit. She is here to tell her story in a way that is both mysterious and in your face so you have to deal with the questions she poses about the rise and perils of a powerful woman in today’s world. I will not stand here and tell you I got everything out of this album that I should, but I got enough to appreciate it and yearn for another spin.

Track of Distinction: “Los Ageless” edges out “Masseduction” and “Pills” though, if I’m completely honest, any track on this album could have made the ToD cut.

revival_by_eminem_coverArtist: Eminem
Album: ‘Revival
Year: 2017

In a country and in an industry that likes nothing better than a good redemption story, Eminem seems to milk it for all its worth. After reveling playing the bad guy over the course of his first four albums, he doubled-down, then got clean, then went back to his roots, and now he’s just trying to find himself once again through the personas and show us something true. To be honest, he doesn’t sound like the same guy. With a lower voice and lyrics that are not rapid-fired at us makes me think he’s finally comfortable in his skin. Until the next one, that is.

Track of Distinction: “Like Home” shows that Eminem is still at his best when he gets political and takes a stand.

add_violenceArtist: Nine Inch Nails
Albums: ‘Not the Actual Events EP,’ ‘Add Violence EP,’ and ‘Bad Witch
Years: 2016, 2017, and 2018 (respectively)

Trent has been doing a good job at keeping his sound and his brand alive for the last few decades by not deviating too much from his art and keeping a measured approach. Adding in Atticus Ross to the band–the latest in a storied line of temporary “official” band members–makes it seem like Trent needs help keeping true to himself. I think his work with Ross on previous projects allowed the two to trust each other enough to put out these EPs and this year’s album that show that sometimes we need someone to keep up pointed in the right direction.

Track of Distinction: “Not Anymore” from ‘Add Violence’ sounds like his industrial blended with pain that made ‘The Fragile’ so compelling.

eels_-_the_deconstructionArtist: Eels
Album: ‘The Deconstruction
Year: 2018

Every Eels album feels like opening a gift from a friend who doesn’t really like you but seems to bring you something on your birthday. You appreciate the thought even if the gift is usually strange and rather horrifying. Since every Eels album is a conglomeration of E’s life since the release of the last one, this lets us know how he’s doing and how much he hates, not only his life, but the world around him. This offering is pretty middle of the road for him not wanting to burn the entire planet down but also letting us know that we both inspire him and enrage him all at once. Good to ahve you back, E. Thanks for the present.

Track of Distinction: “Premonition” edges out the saccharine “Today Is the Day.”

all_the_light_above_it_tooArtist: Jack Johnson
Album: ‘All the Light Above It Too
Year: 2017

I keep waiting for the day I’m disappointed in listening to a Jack Johnson album but that day has not come to pass. While others of his ilk tend to regress in their style, Johnson seems to find a way to keep it fresh while also familiar and always amiable. This album, Johnson’s seventh (!) sounds like it was made by a guy who isn’t burdened by fame, expectations, or even his own sense of self. He is just making music he wants to make and damn the critics. Good for him.

Track of Distinction: “My Mind Is For Sale” has a really fun island vibe that proves sometimes giving zero fucks can result in good music.

macklemore_geminiArtist: Macklemore
Album: ‘Gemini
Year: 2017

Macklemore, I’ll give you tens of my dollars to get Ryan Lewis back to making your beats. I don’t know what was going on with this album but it sounded like a huge regression in both time and talent. Sure, that kind of garage beat underground sound might work for the unknowns, but for someone like Macklemore who has a brand and a reputation to uphold, this is a huge step backward. He can still rhyme, but

Track of Distinction: “Intentions” is a softer beat but it has real heart. Shame I could have made the backing mix.

the_killers_-_wonderful_wonderfulArtist: The Killers
Album: ‘Wonderful Wonderful
Year: 2017

I have to give it to a band that is still trying to outrun its debut success by putting out album after album of music that is equally as ambitious but not nearly as catchy. Earlier this year, as their breakout hit celebrated its 14th year on the charts, I came to this album and found that not much has changed; the band still puts out good music, it sells rather well, but the hook is missing. Like in nature, you’re not going to catch much without a damn hook.

Track of Distinction: “Rut” is the anthem we all need from time to time.

4-44_album_coverArtist: Jay-Z
Album: ‘4:44
Year: 2017

One of the things that kinda turns me off from rap music is all the beef. It’s almost a full time job following who is arguing with whom and for what reason, who made up with whom and why, who are the mortal enemies, and who is in the right. I need a goddamn scorecard to follow this shit and this album doesn’t make it any easier. I couldn’t enjoy it the way I should have been because I’m wondering who the fuck he’s talking about on nearly every track. Sure, I know that he cheated on Beyonce and apologized for it, but that’s it. You shouldn’t have to watch TMZ every night to appreciate a piece of music.

Track of Distinction: “The Story of OJ” is about the two ways of living rich in America and how  we often regret the things we both can and cannot control.

71vytw7b9pl-_sy355_Artist: Soundtrack
Album: ‘The Bob’s Burger’s Music Album
Year: 2017

Like I mentioned on several of my other soundtrack reviews, sometimes the album is only worthwhile if you’ve seen the accompanying movie or show. While the music in Bob’s Burgers is as exceptional as it is pivotal to its exposition, to go on and on about it to someone who may not have seen it would be wasted time. But, for those like me who love and adore the show and all of its musical interludes (even the weird ones) have their own kitsch and charm that make the show what it is.

Track of Distinction: “Bad Stuff Happens in the Bathroom” edges out “Electric Love,” “Kill the Turkey,” and the extremely ambitious and wonderfully executed Die Hard/Working Girl school musical medley beautifully named, “Work Hard or Die Trying, Girl” (scenes for context and because it’s really funny).

gathering_josh_ritter_album_coverArtist: Josh Ritter
Album: ‘Gathering
Year: 2017

Sometimes, when an artist lets their personal life compromise the art, a break needs to be had. Ritter experienced that several years ago when his marriage dissolved and he released ‘The Beast In Its Tracks’ and I braced for the end. Thankfully, after two solid follow-ups, this one included, I’m guessing he’s back on track with life and love. Sure, there’s mentions of pain in this album but he is using it to his advantage this time instead of letting it overwhelm him. This is the Josh I know and adore and I hope he sticks around for a while longer.

Track of Distinction: “When Will I Be Changed” with Bob Weir is hauntingly soothing and downright brilliant.

51ajaqu511lArtist: Bill Withers
Album: ‘Live at Carnegie Hall
Year: 1973

This is the album that brought “I Can’t Write Left-Handed” into my life and, for that alone, this goes down as a classic. But, listening to it fully in one go, I found that Bill is a musician of joy. While others might brood and sulk even while performing, there’s nothing but joy coming from Bill. From his stories to his crowd interactions, to his impromptu returns, he proves why he is the man and why he is a legend.

Track of Distinction: “Let Me In Your Life” gets the nod, though his rendition of “Grandma’s Hands” shouldn’t be missed.

cleopatra_album_coverArtist: The Lumineers
Album: ‘Cleopatra
Year: 2016

There is a time and a place for some good, minimalist music in any repertoire, but too much can get a bit boring. The Lumineers stay in their wheelhouse on their second album giving us some of that jingle-jangle “Hey” folk music that is as obtrusive as it is imaginative. I found myself forgetting I was listening to an album and even went to select an album once only to realize it was playing this album. That’s not usually a good sign.

Track of Distinction: “Long Way From Home” is the most interesting track on the platter and even it doesn’t offer much in terms of variation.

villains_cover_artworkArtist: Queens of the Stone Age
Album: ‘Villains
Year: 2017

For a band who, one paper, can still bring the heat, I’m not sure why this album seemed like such a let down. Perhaps if someone rages for too long you start to think there’s something wrong and feel sorry for them instead of thinking their just some hardcore asshole. There are elements of this album that resonate–their lyrics, their drums and bass lines–but everything else feels hollow. I might need to giev this one another spin to give it a fair shake.

Track of Distinction: “The Evil Has Landed” is good despite the fact my copy had messed up audio. This is a quintessential QOTSA track if there ever was one.

tyler2c_the_creator_-_flower_boyArtist: Tyler, The Creator
Album: ‘Scum Fuck Flower Boy
Year: 2017

I don’t think Tyler ever wants to grow up. Since rapping about his immature insecurities and his flaws pay the bills, why grow and adapt as an artist? Luckily, his talent more than makes up for it and this album comes off with more polished than it really earned. Some day, we will look back at a time when two rappers–Kanye and Tyler–kind of broke the mold and gave us a rapper we weren’t ready for and who really wasn’t ready for us, but delivered greatness.

Track of Distinction: “November” reminds us that growing up is scary, maturing is hard, and fame makes everything harder than it should be.

concrete_and_gold_foo_fighters_albumArtist: Foo Fighters
Album: ‘Concrete and Gold
Year: 2017

Dave Grohl has become fully self-aware and this album is making us all pay the price for that. This album wasn’t a Foo Fighters album whatsoever; it was a Grohl solo project that he needed help on and it turned into something that doesn’t reflect what they stand for. Perhaps they want to become a pop-rock band and go on something like the Warped Tour as the old guys trying to catch the attention of a younger generation that doesn’t deserve them. C’mon, Dave, we deserve better than this.

Track of Distinction: “Happy Ever After (Zero Hour)” wasn’t awful. It kinda reminds me of stuff from ‘There’s Nothing Left to Lose’ with a hint of Radiohead mixed in.

sleep_well_beastArtist: The National
Album: ‘Sleep Well Beast
Year: 2017

I was told not to expect much from this album, so I don’t know if it was my low expectations that made this album seem dynamic or if it was that good? This band has the handicap of having me compare everything they do to ‘High Violet,’ their best album and one of my personal favs. But this one held its own giving me what I wanted and expected from them–nothing too flashy, Matt’s droning, hypnotic vocals, plenty of dark metaphors to wrestle with. In all, a solid album that earned another spin in the near future.

Track of Distinction: “Cairn at the Liquor Store” is just excellent and even kind of fun to listen to.

lcd_soundsystem_-_american_dreamArtist: LCD Soundsystem
Album: ‘American Dream
Year: 2017

Retirement is fucking overrated. LCD Soundsystem made a big deal about hanging up their gear only to come back with an album that, not only encapsulates the essence of their sound, but builds upon it in weird and wonderful ways. This could have been an album of wacky and aimless experimentation but, instead, it was focused and really slick. Definitely a must-listen.

Track of Distinction: “Call the Police” is just a good jam by the band that is both infectious while being very simple at its core.

kesha_-_rainbow_28official_album_cover29Artist: Ke$ha
Album: ‘Rainbow
Year: 2017

Ke$ha is becoming the artist I had hope Katy Perry would have the guts to become. This album is daring without becoming an art piece. She dug into her will to be an artist–I’m guessing this is a result from her awful and all-too public legal battle with her shitface former producer–to make a shockingly diverse, eclectic, and very well-done album that, not only includes her signature sound, but also a couple of country-inspired hits. She did a duet with Dolly Parton and it’s awesome! In fact …

Track of Distinction: Her duet with legend Dolly Parton, “Old Flames (Can’t Hold a Candle To You),” is magic and feels like a torch is being passed from one generation to another.

gogol_bordello_seekers_and_finders_coverArtist: Gogol Bordello
Album: ‘Seekers and Finders
Year: 2017

It stinks to come off of two really solid offerings from great performers to hear an album that seems to be a husk of the band’s former self. Gogol Bordello endeared themselves as the raucous gypsy-punk badasses but, on this album, take it a few notches down and really seem to phone it in. This sounds more like a shitty Coldplay album than anything resembling punk rock. Shame!

Track of Distinction: “Saboteur Blues” would be a nice bridging song between what the band was and what it wants to become if what it wanted to become was something better.

iron_26_wine_-_beast_epicArtist: Iron & Wine
Album: ‘Beast Epic
Year: 2017

There is something to be said for consistency in the face of an industry that seems to embrace change for the sake of change. Sam Beam’s project continues with another album filled with songs that seem to be made out of blood, sweat, and bone leaving me to wonder how he doesn’t sleep for a month after every studio session. Though deeply personal and extremely moving, he doesn’t let the listener carry the load leaving the sound deceptively light and refreshing. Sound weird? Just listen.

Track of Distinction: “Call It Dreaming,” like much of the rest of the album, is light, refreshing, and very relaxing.

pleasure_-_feistArtist: Feist
Album: ‘Pleasure
Year: 2017

There is something uniquely intimate about this album. It has an acoustic sound that is soft and warm but also challenges you to lean in and truly experience the music. The songs are personal without being unnerving and that speaks volumes in a musical culture that seems to invite every artist to reveal as much as possible in order to sell. Feist’s willingness to show her vulnerabilities without giving up her power and respect makes this a very powerful listen.

Track of Distinction: “I Wish I Didn’t Miss You” and its love-lost libretto cuts to the bone and asks for more blood.

katy_perry_-_witness_28official_album_cover29Artist: Katy Perry
Album: ‘Witness
Year: 2017

All I could think of while listening to this album is that I fell for it again. I came in hoping that Perry had grown as an artist and this might be a stepping stone to her to finally unleash her voice and free it from the auto-tuned and overproduced bullshit she keeps putting out every couple of years. But what did I get? More of the same bullshit. I’d be more pissed but I’ve never been a huge fan.

Track of Distinction: Her ballads allow her vocals to take the lead and “Miss You More” is a pretty damn good example of it.

rancid_trouble_makerArtist: Rancid
Album: ‘Trouble Maker
Year: 2017

Nine albums later and Rancid is still slaying it like it’s their first. This entire album screams like they still have a chip on their shoulder and they’re going to get this album out there even if they have to borrow someone’s computer to burn all of the CDs themselves. The edge is honed and intact, the rage and disdain for the system is still there, and it just exudes that sublime noise that Rancid fans have come to love and expect. Mad props for keeping it going this long and this hard.

Track of Distinction: “Farewell Lola Blue” could have been on their debut. Time stands still for these guys.

everything_now_arcade_fireArtist: Arcade Fire
Album: ‘Everything Now
Year: 2017

I don’t know if Arcade Fire has earned the right to be so weird and so underwhelming at this point in their run. But this album is like Win Butler wanted to see what he could make by not really paying much attention and then releasing an album that is expected to sell based on the weight of the Arcade Fire name. Most of the tracks seem to be half an idea that are not allowed to mature and simply die on the vine. This band is better than that and they should know it.

Track of Distinction: “Put Your Money On Me” was the single for a reason. It’s the only developed track on the entire record.

norahjonesdaybreaksArtist: Norah Jones
Album: ‘Day Breaks
Year: 2016

After her 2012 release, ‘Little Broken Hearts,’ I was afraid that we were going to lose Norah the way country music (kinda) lost Taylor Swift. But Jones comes back with a soft, soulful jazz album that is as endearing and beautiful as her smash debut that came out … fuck, 16 years ago. *bends knee, hears audible creak*

Track of Distinction: “Peace” goes down as smooth as a fine whiskey with a touch of smoldering burn on the finish.

emily27s_d2bevolution_28front_cover29Artist: Esperanza Spalding
Album: ‘Emily’s D+Evolution
Year: 2016

If there was ever to judge a book by its cover, it would be here. Spalding uses her fifth studio album to deliver a daring Afro-fusion jazz album that is about as accessible as a bank vault. If you’re brave enough, and you have the patience, you will be rewarded with riches that include some of the best imaginative jazz out there. You’re not going to find some pop princess doing stuff like this.

Track of Distinction: “Elevate or Operate” challenges without alienating and would have been best suited earlier in the track list instead of at 10.

emperor_of_sand_coverArtist: Mastodon
Albums: ‘Cold Dark Place EP‘ and ‘Emperor of Sand
Year: 2017 (both)

I’m kind of bummed to know that I came to a great band just in time to see their epic decline. Over their last three albums, Mastodon has tried to play a more conciliatory form of heavy metal in order to try and bring the genre into the mainstream more and broaden their fanbase. The problem is they lost their edge and that is no more obvious than on ‘Emperor of Sand,’ an album that sounds more like an adult contemporary album than anything done by the band that made this.

Track of Distinction: “Ancient Kingdom” gives us a brief return to their old form that satisfies as much as it can on such a thin offering.

humanzgorillazArtist: Gorillaz
Albums: ‘Humanz‘ and ‘The Now Now
Years: 2017 and 2018

Every time I think I know what I’m going to get from this group, they come right back and keep me on my toes. Sure, I expect them to bring a lot of experimental sounds and vibes to everything they do, but ‘Humanz’ and parts of ‘The Now Now’ brings a big spirit of collaboration that requires a lot of buy-in from the other artists. Thankfully, their reputation precedes them and everyone who buys into a band that is becoming more of a beat-maker factory is ready for the ride.

Track of Distinction: “Strobelite” from ‘Humanz’ is an outstanding stone groove but I also have to give a nod to the Snoop Dogg collab “Hollywood” from ‘The Now Now’ that shows the versatility of both ends of that scope.

A Sigh of Relief …

July 4, 2018 Leave a comment

And, with that, I’m done with my journey. Well, the first pass of my journey. Like any worthwhile path we follow, we must tread again to return home. In the case of this project, there was a lot of music left behind the first time through. Like I’ve said in the past, I thought doing this would only take a few months and not the nearly SEVEN YEARS it has actually taken. So, returning to the beginning is only fair.

But, as I look back at how I got through and to this place, I would be remiss if I didn’t make some changes along the way. The biggest change will be in the rigid structure the first pass went through. I was so obsessed with the whole alphabetical order thing that it kept me from experiencing some music that was coming out and new artists whose place in line was already passed. A prime example of this was seeing Lorde come out and make it big … and I was already deep into the letter M. That shit gnaws at me. So, this time around, I’m being a little more lax on the ordering. If something big comes out I’m going to listen to it regardless of where I am in the alphabet.

And yes, I am still going to use the iTunes alphabetical order as the base structure of this next time around. I found that, with this kind of ordering, I allow myself to experience a nice mix of artists whose genres may not overlap. Why fix that aspect that wasn’t broken?

But it does mean that the mixes are getting a shake up. Since I’m being flexible with the alphabet I need to translate that to the mixes. So, instead of releasing a mix for every letter I complete, there will simply be a mix for every 20 artists or albums I complete. That seems to be a nice, round number to use that should allow for some more regularity with these mixes.

However, this also means the end of The Catch-Up series of mixes. If an artist I like or have heard before comes out with a new album, I’m not going to wait until some arbitrary milestone to listen to it, I’m just going for it. It stinks listening to an album a year after its release hoping it’ll hold up to my expectations. It doesn’t usually work.

That being said, I already have a large list of albums I’ve been holding off on listening to for a while so I’m going to do one last huge Catch-Up to kick off the new series. There are nearly 40 albums on that list, so it’s going to take a little bit, but I think it will be worth it. There’s a lot of cool shit on that list.

Finally, as I start off on this next phase of my journey, I have some sad news to announce: my trusted iPod is dead. The logic board has a huge malfunction and I’m weighing the costs and benefits of fixing it. On the one hand, it has a relatively new battery and it is iFlash-ed out, but the screen sucks and the click wheel doesn’t work like it used to. Plus, I have a good Nano I can use in the meantime while I figure shit out, so it’s not a huge deal. If anyone out there has an old, working click-wheel iPod they would like to sell to me cheap, let me know!

Onward and upward, my friends! And, as always, enjoy the music!
